Stress-Conditioned Allomorphy in Surmiran (Rumantsch)

چکیده

I approach my topic here from a somewhat different perspective than that of several other contributors to the present volume. To be clear, my knowledge of the Romance languages and their comparative grammar is quite limited, and my knowledge of their histories even more so. e discussion below, with some limited exceptions, is thus not based on detailed historical and comparative analyses, but rather represents a somewhat self-contained account of a single synchronic system. As Romance Philology, therefore, it may be judged to be weak; but I submit that its weaknesses are similar to those of a child encountering the primary linguistic data provided by those around her, and forced to acquire the underlying linguistic system on that basis. If the analysis I offer differs in some ways from what one might be inclined to on the basis of the precedents set by other languages, I suggest that that is entirely appropriate. After all, linguistic systems do change, sometimes quite radically in their nature but with very little alteration in the surface forms they support, as a result of new generations of learners making different abductive inferences from the data at hand (Andersen ).

Stem Alternations in Swiss Rumantsch

The present paper continues an extended conversation with Martin Maiden (Anderson 2008; Maiden 2008; Anderson 2010, 2011; Maiden 2011) about the analysis of stem alternations in one form of Swiss Rumantsch, Surmiran as spoken in the area of Savognin and the surrounding communities. Over time, our analyses have shown some convergence, but important differences remain. Some of these, such as the ...

Failing one ’ s obligations : Defectiveness in

Compared with some other authors in the present volume, I do not have an overall theory of defectiveness and the status of paradigmatic gaps to offer in this paper. As opposed to the rich and varied array of defectiveness documented by Boyé &Hofherr, this volume, for other Romance languages, I have only one poor little crippled verb to offer up on parade: a single verb in a relatively obscure l...

On Affix Allomorphy and Syllable Countin

1. Introduction At issue in this paper is the interaction between prosody and morphology; specifically, the way in which metrical foot structure conditions allomorphs of affixes. I will propose an analysis of various affix allomorphies in Estonian, which are apparently conditioned by the number of syllables in the base to which the allomorphs attach. As I will show, it is not syllable number th...

Phonetically Conditioned Allomorphy of Functional Words in a Dialect of Southern Italy

This paper examines a particular kind of phonetic variation observed in the realization of articles and clitics in a dialect of Southern Italy. The examined bound morphs consist of single unstressed vowels, which appear to be phonologically underspecified with regard to height. The spectral characteristics of 157 tokens show that these vocalic segments form a continuum ranging from high to mid ...
